Watched Wyland paint
the Whaling Wall with SkyiCam

The Fair and Wyland first began working together during the 1985 Fair, when he painted Whaling Wall No. 7 on the side of the Gems & Minerals building. A life-sized depiction of California Gray Whales, the wall unfortunately was taken down when the Fairgrounds Grandstand was rebuilt in 1992. Wyland made several appearances at the 2005 Fair, where the seeds were planted for his involvement this year.

Wyland long ago set a goal to paint 100 life-sized Whaling Walls, depicting various species of whales and other marine life, and has completed 93 of them on four continents. This year, he painted the "new" Whaling Wall No. 7 June 10-17 on the east wall of a new Fairgrounds building, the Expo Center. This building, which is known as AgriFair during the Fair, is 65 feet high and 200 feet wide, with about an acre of exhibit space. The wall will be among the largest he has painted. Whaling Wall 33, "Planet Ocean," in Long Beach, is 1280 feet long by 105 feet high, and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest mural in the world.

Not only is Wyland world renowned as an artist, but also has become a leading advocate for marine resource conservation. An accomplished painter, sculpture, photographer, writer, and SCUBA diver, he established his non-profit Wyland Foundation to support numerous conservation programs. In partnership with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Foundation is actively engaged in teaching millions of students around the world to become caring, informed stewards of our oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands. His efforts have been recognized by the United Nations, Sierra Club, the Underwater Academy of Arts and Sciences, and private and public institutions throughout the world.

Today, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the 21st Century, with artwork in museums, corporate collections, and private homes in more than one hundred countries. You can learn more about Wyland through his website, www.wyland.com
